2013 CPC Nationals - Venue, Travel & Accommodations

The Venue

The North Course has been selected to host the 2015 Pan American Games Canoe Sprint Competition. The $10 million venue improvements will be completed in time for The Canoe Polo Nationals, making it one of the first national events that will have the opportunity to compete at the new venue! The event will take place July 5th-7th, 2013 with 150-200 athletes expected. The course is more than 125 meters wide with multiple access points for safety. Paved asphalt trails, border each side of the course allowing for great viewing.  The Waterway is known for its fresh clean water.

For the 2013 Canoe Polo Nationals, the venue will be equipped with 4 fully playable polo pitches with surrounding docks and a warm up area with equipped with two nets. Other improvements include permanent grandstand seating with a centre court, athletes centre, showers and washrooms, chief umpire and officials offices, competition management office and technical officials meeting room.

Every aspect of this unique venue meets or exceeds all existing international standards:

Course Width: 125 – 135 m wide
Lanes: 6 competition lanes, each 13m with 1 return lane
Race Distance: 1000 meters Depth: 9.2 m depth over full distance
Sides: Uniform slope of 29°; docking facilities extend the length of the racing area for easy embarkation
Current: Negligible to none – scientifically measured and confirmed
Water Quality: Excellent quality freshwater – source of municipal drinking supply
Avg. Water Temp.: 21-24° C in August
Other: Sheltered from the prevailing SW winds; paved walking paths along both sides of the race area with full visibility for spectators, suitable for rollerblading or biking.

The City of Welland is conveniently located and accessible by the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW), a four lane highway from all major centres: Toronto, Hamilton, Buffalo (NY, USA), and St.Catharines/Niagara Falls.


The City of Welland and the Welland International Flatwater Course are surrounded by three international airports.

Travel time from each airport:
Hamilton International Airport- 45 minutes
Buffalo International Airport, New York, USA- 35 minutes 
Toronto Pearson International Airport- 75 minutes

Buffalo and Hamilton Airports offer less expensive alternatives though sometimes with limited international flight plans. Pearson International Airport, Toronto, conveniently located minutes from Highway 401, can easily provide world class service for all visiting countries.

Trains & Buses

Via Rail Train Stations are located in nearby St.Catharines and Niagara Falls. Connecting transportation to the City of Welland, or all regional accommodations, is readily available and within a 20 minute drive from the stations. Local bus services are available throughout the Region to assist with travel around the area for a nominal fee. The WEGO is a bus service available for travel to all of the major attractions within Niagara Falls, stopping every 20 minutes and a full two-day pass is only $11.50 CAN.

Getting to the Course

All competition events will take place on the North Course of the Welland International Flatwater Center at the corner of Canal Bank Street and Humberstone Road in Welland. Look for the signage as you get into Welland and closer to the competition venue.  View Map »

Driving from Buffalo: Queen Elizabeth Highway (QEW) North to Netherby Road exit. Follow Netherby Road as it turns into Townline Tunnel Road and then into Humberstone Road until you see the course.

Driving from Hamilton/Toronto/Southern Ontario: Queen Elizabeth Highway (QEW) South to Hwy 406. Hwy 406 ends at East Main Street in Welland. Turn right on East Main Street and drive into town, over the canal. Turn left/south on Prince Charles Drive until you reach Humberstone Road. Turn left on Humberstone Road and left again just before the canal.

Driving from Niagara Falls: Exit Niagara Falls on Highway 420. Take the Queen Elizabeth Highway (QEW) South exit to #47 Lyons Creek Road/Biggar Road. Turn Right on Biggar Road and follow until you reach Moyer Road. Turn left on Moyer Road until you reach East Main Street. Turn right on East Main Street and drive into town, over the canal. Turn left/south on Prince Charles Drive until you reach Humberstone Road. Turn left on Humberstone Road and left again just before the canal.
