Walking the Trails with Helen Dyck

A spring in her step and a warm greeting for all, Helen Dyck looks forward to her daily walk, “it’s lovely. You feel so refreshed when you come back. ” Meandering through Merritt Island and hugging the shoreline of the Welland Recreational Canal you’ll find over 20 km of paved trails inviting you to enjoy the natural beauty and ever-changing scenery. That’s where you’ll also find Helen Dyck. A spry octogenarian whose enthusiasm and love of life is evident by the spring in her step and warm greeting to all she meets along the trail. Helen has been walking the trail for nine years. “Over the years, I’ve met so many nice people. Everyone is so friendly”.  Her secret, she shares, “is to give them a smile”.  She especially enjoys the changing of the seasons and watching the antics and habits of the many animals. With her infectious warm smile and soft demeanour, Helen explains that she started walking as a way to keep healthy. A goal she accomplished and more. Walking from two and a half to four hours per day, her philosophy is, “If more people walked the trails, the hospitals wouldn’t be so crowded.” She is thankful and fascinated each day noting that, “it’s here, its free, and can be enjoyed by all.”
