The Welland Recreational Canal Corporation was established in 2001 as an independent body, with a Board of Directors made up of nine people; three members of council and six citizens approved by council.

The WRCC's mandate is to be the "stewards" of the Recreational Canal ~ to improve, develop and protect the Welland Recreational Waterway. The Corporation, through Community Input Sessions, has identified areas of development for recreation, arts, culture, sport tourism, community enjoyment, education and nature conservation. The Corporation helps fund special projects on the Recreational Waterway specifically those aimed at fostering economic development, community development, public awareness, public support and public partnerships in the development of the Recreational Waterway.

Our mandate is to:
•protect the land and waterways
that make up the recreational waterway
•foster public awareness of the recreational waterway
•develop the recreational waterway
for the benefit of the community

We are proud of the role we are playing in the development and maintenance of the waterway and lands. Acting as a catalyst for economic development and as a facilitator in uniting not-for-profit organizations, corporations and government, all for the purpose of improving, sustaining and expanding the benefits of and the role played by the waterway in the lives of every Welland citizen. We recognize the need to ensure that today’s youth and adults alike understand the value of this unique opportunity and that they each play a key role in its development and use.
